Flying into Seattle

If you are traveling to the San Juan Islands (Friday Harbor) from outside the Seattle area, you’ll want to fly into the SeaTac (SEA) or Everett (PAE) airports. Paine Field in Everett is a smaller airport that allows you to skip Seattle traffic, but has a limited number of incoming flights.

The Ferry to Friday Harbor

Ferries to Friday Harbor (San Juan Island) depart from Anacortes.

  • Approx. a 2 hour drive North of SeaTac airport

  • If you are flying in, you can either rent a car or take a shuttle north to Anacortes (from SeaTac airport only)

You can drive onto the ferry or walk on.

  • If you walk onto the ferry, reservations are not required.

  • If you are driving a car onto the ferry, reservations are HIGHLY recommended for BOTH your arrival & departure trips.

    • You will need to arrive 45-60min prior to sailing to get fully checked in.

    • If you miss the 30 minute cutoff, you will lose your reservation and be grouped in with the standby cars (aka you may wait for hours to get on/off island).

How to make a ferry reservation:

  • Click "Reserve Now."

  • Select Anacortes to Friday Harbor for your arrival trip

  • Select Friday Harbor to Anacortes for your departure trip

    • Don’t reserve a ferry to Orcas, Lopez, or Shaw island and expect to be able to get to San Juan Island from there… the islands are not connected by a bridge and you can only get between them by ferry!

  • Reservations are OPEN!

    • Ferry reservations are released in 3 waves, with 30% of reservations released in each wave:

      • 1st wave: April 16 2024. All summer reservations open up through 9/21/24. We recommend booking right away.

      • 2nd wave: 2 weeks before the sailing date at 7am PDT.

        • If you miss the first wave and plan to travel to the island on Friday, Sept 20 then set an alarm for 7am PT on Friday Sept 6. If you plan to leave the island on Sunday, Sept 22 then set an alarm for 7am PT on Sunday, Sept 8.

      • 3rd wave: 2 days before the sailing date at 7am PDT.

        • By this point, usually only the very early or very late boats for any given day are available, so we don’t recommend waiting. Those last reservations usually sell out by 7:15am, so set an alarm!

If you aren’t sure of your dates or aren’t sure if you are going to bring a car, then we recommend booking anyway. There is no charge when booking a ferry reservation but you will be charged a “no show” fee of $19 if you book a reservation and then don’t use it or cancel it. You can cancel your reservation up until 5pm the day before your travel date.
